Well, lets see, where to begin.
#1 : I have a pile of burgundy and cream brocade (very obnoxious) given to me by the lovely Ekaterina years and years ago. It has since been pulled out once a year or so, looked at, and put back away due to me not yet having found the perfect project to use it for.
#2 : I found a portrait of Elanora d'Toledo wearing an obnoxious brocade dress...hmm...a dress very similar in cut to the one she was buried in, which I just happen to have the pattern for, thanks to Agnes being kind enough to have loaned me her copy of "Patterns of Fashion".
#2.1 : I proceeded to alter my corset so the straps are actually thin enough to wear this cut of dress over without showing an inch or so of corset strap on each side of the neckline. DONE! (I am very proud of doing this before making the dress. I had already put off altering the corset for over half a year. Lazy, lazy me.)
#3 : I took my corseted measurements with the straps altered. I have a lot more room for that wide neckline now. That makes me happy! Now I'm going to draw out an altered version of the pattern and make a cloth mock-up to test the fit. I decided to alter the pattern so that it would lace at the side, under my arm, instead of up the back side seams. This is sheer laziness (and a certain amount of not wishing to bring frustration upon myself, I guess.). I don't want to have the bother of making the pattern of the brocade match up in back. If the only seams on the garment are hidden by my sleeves, I don't have to worry about matching the design.
